There is no single ideal GSM. A lighter towel can be compact and quick drying, while a heavier towel can feel more substantial. The best specification is the lightest construction that still delivers the required cleaning, absorbency, branding and presentation.
What GSM actually tells a buyer
If two towels use the same material, construction and dimensions, the higher-GSM option normally contains more fabric. It may feel denser or more substantial, but it can also take longer to dry and cost more to ship.
GSM does not make unlike fabrics directly comparable. A 350 GSM waffle microfiber towel and a 350 GSM cotton terry towel can feel and perform very differently because the fibre, yarn, loop and weave structures are different.
Useful working ranges
These are working ranges, not universal rules. A compact towel with a reinforced edge and good construction can outperform a heavier towel that is poorly specified. Ask for the finished sample weight and dimensions alongside the GSM.

A better way to request a sample
Instead of asking only for “a 400 GSM golf towel”, describe the result you need. For example: a 40 × 60 cm cotton towel with a soft but not bulky feel, embroidered logo, corner eyelet and carabiner, individually packed for a tournament.
Ask the supplier to confirm the material composition, nominal GSM, size tolerance, finished unit weight, decoration details and washing expectations. Approve the physical sample as the production reference, because fabric descriptions and photographs cannot fully communicate density and hand-feel.
